Sometimes it's easy to forget what a 'proper pub' is when we live in an age of Scandinavian inspired bars and the ongoing cask vs. keg battle; however, the Rutland Arms is in Sheffield to remind it. It's dark wood, random decorations, and a help yourself sauce packet station.
After hearing many tales about the 'rutty butty' from a colleague, we knew we had to visit whilst in the city. Service was slightly stand-offish at first, but it turned out to be because someone (naming no names) asked after the chip sandwich as opposed to its proper name; once we reverted to the vernacular, all was well again.
The rutty butty, for those who don't know, is a chip barm. It comes with cheese and a tomato sauce, loaded onto a wholemeal bap - and that's it. Simple, indulgent, comfort food.
It's not somewhere to spend hours of your day but if you're in the mood for something which will take you back to your childhood, both in terms of the pub itself and the combination of carbs on carbs, it's here. -

Proper looking pub with a good sense of humour. Nice beer, some good keg stuff and a pile of ciders at the back of the bar. Had a decent pint of Hoptathlon by Blue Bees.
Went for the Dhan Saak, as I was turned on by the menu's promise of 'mixed vegetable and lentil action'. It wasn't quite the orgy in my mouth that I expected, but was decent fodder all the same.
Might have enjoyed my food even more if I didn't have to witness a nappy being changed in the pub immediately beforehand. -

Wide selection of ales and lagers. The interior is rather dated and delapidated, needs a spring clean to say the least. However it is nice and friendly, with a range of decent food. The best part is the beer garden to the rear which has lots of plants and feels like a little oasis in the middle of the busy city centre, very nice in the summer.
